One step forward, two steps backwards.... No matter how many times you are told this will occur in the NICU it is never easy when things are not going well.
Both girls were doing quite well until yesterday. Ella is still doing great with her Aladdin cap and she is on low flow oxygen for a few hours every day with the intention of increasing that daily. She is taking 15mL of milk. She is moving around a lot more and is able to move her head from side to side, even with all the oxygen apparatus.
Lucy is sick again. The doctors are pretty sure she has an infection of some sort but they will not know for certain until later today. Yesterday morning she was having a lot of trouble breathing so she had to be re-intubated and put back on the ventilator. They started her on a couple of different types of antibiotics hoping they would help the infection. This morning, she had to be put back on the ossilator as she was needing more support than the conventional ventilator could give her. She is also not responding to the antibiotics. They are going to try some different medications and see if they help. Lucy had only a few days of good health and this is quite stressful for her small body to be so sick again. It is also quite stressful for us and we will be at the hospital as much as possible again today.
