Through The Waters

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you. Isaiah 43:2a The journey of Ella and Lucy.

Lucy this afternoon. Things are slowly improving for Lucy. She ended up having two different infections, one in her blood and one in her lungs. Combined, this made her a sick little girl. The doctors have fine-tuned her antibiotics and she is showing improvement. Lucy is still on the oscillator and likely will be on some sort of ventilation for a few more days until she is really feeling better. They have started her back on her feeds again but it is back at the beginning again with 1mL every four hours. This the third weekend in a row that Lucy has been sick, we are hoping it will be the last one.
Ella this evening. The respiratory therapists and doctors are trying Ella on a new way to support her breathing. This is high-flow oxygen. She uses the nasal prongs the same as low-flow oxygen but the air is made more humid or wet. It doesn't provide any pressure but is easier for her to handle than low-flow for longer periods of time. Ella was put on high-flow at noon and she was still doing great when we saw her this evening. The bright light you can see on her wrist is a monitor that measures her oxygen saturation level.

The NICU is packed right now and our nurse tonight said this is what it is like most of the winter. Babies come from all over Ontario for their care in London, which must be difficult for parents and families who come from quite a distance. We are once again thankful that we live so close to such a world-class NICU and we are close to so many family members and friends.
