Through The Waters

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you. Isaiah 43:2a The journey of Ella and Lucy.

Lucy is still having a tough time. We had hoped she was recovering from her pneumonia and blood infection but she needed increased ventilation as the week went on. She was also not being able to digest her food and she is now getting her nutrition through the IV only. At noon on Saturday, the respiratory therapists started her on a new type of ventilator, the Jet, hoping that the change from the oscillator would help. As the afternoon went on Lucy did seem to improve. Her eyes were open and she was moving around and sucking on a soother. But on Sunday, after blood work it was determined she was likely fighting another infection. A number of tests were done and we will find out this afternoon what is happening. She is now on additional antibiotics and we hope that the doctors will get the bottom of why she is still sick.

Ella continues to do very well - she has now doubled her birth weight. Last night she was 3pounds 4ounces. Amazing! Every other night she has a bath and we are able to help. I'm sure every first time mother is nervous giving their baby a bath and I am no different. Holding onto a squirming three pound baby is not very easy! She doesn't seem to mind the water, but she doesn't really like getting dried off as you can see by her expression. You can see that her cheeks are starting to get a little chubby. When she is being bathed and held, Ella is on the high-flow oxygen. She is doing very well on it and she will hopefully be ready to try it out again full time soon.
