The girls after their bath tonight.
On Tuesday we were in London for their visit to the Developmental Follow-Up Clinic at St. Joe's. They recieve a check-up when they are four, eight, and twelve months corrected in their first year and then less frequently. It was great to go by the NICU and visit with so many of the nurses who took such good care of the girls.
At the appointment, the girls were assessed by both a doctor and physio-therapist. They talk to us about any issues or concerns we may have, review the notes from all of our other appointments (hearing, sight, etc), and score the girls based on their development.
Ella is now 17lbs4oz. She is doing very well developmentally, measuring over the 90th percentile for her corrected age. This means that Ella is starting to catch up to what other babies are doing for her actual age. She can really crawl quickly and pull herself up. She has done incredibly well for a 25 weeker!
Lucy is now 14lbs2oz. Her development is much slower, as it always has been. She scores well below the 5th percentile for her corrected age. The good news is that Lucy is progressing. She is holding her head much better, and can roll both ways. She likes to sit with assistance but she does not weight bear with her legs. She wants to be active but her body does not always co-operate with her. Lucy may be eleven months old and eight months corrected, but she is more like a five month old baby.
Both girls are part of a program where we recieve home visits from development specialists. For our county there is a team of three - a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, and a speech pathologist. They visit regularly, about every three weeks, and assist us in finding ways to help the girls move forward in their development. They have helped a lot with finding new ways to increase Ella's calorie consumption, and that paid off with her weight gain this month. They also give us exercises for Lucy to help her gain strength and co-ordination. This program has been a great support.

I am not sure if you will remember me, but I was at St. Joe's with my 31-week son when you were there with your girls. We met in one of the parent support meetings. My son was trasnferred to a hospital closer to home the following week-end. Anyway, I bookmarked your website and continually check it for updates. I love reading about how your girls are doing. It is nice to hear how other preemies are making out, whether they are a little ahead or a little behind. Dylan is 8-months corrected (10 months actual) and is doing basically what he should be. I think the program you have your girls in is wonderful. We have been seen twice by a developmental thereapist and realize the importance of involving them with Dylan's progress. I hope your girls continue to thrive. If you ever want to talk via email, my address is jennosharp@hotmail.com.
